God of War Ragnarok is around 40 hours in length, Insider Gaming has learned. It's understood that the entire experience is around 40 hours, with 20 hours needed to complete the game's main story.

Sources have said that around 3 and a half hours of the 20 hours played will be cinematic scenes, with the remaining 16 and a half hours for gameplay.

The other 20 hours of game time is to complete all of the additional side quests, with around 19 hours dedicated to gameplay and an additional 1 hour of cinematics.

Of course, these numbers are just estimates and will vary wildly depending on your playstyle.

  • Kratos is a very high poly model
  • major characters are captured using performance capture (body cap and face cap at the same time)
  • the game uses an unbroken camera/single shot
  • indirect illumination is baked but higher quality than the last game
    • higher resolution textures and less light leaking
    • uses screen space directional occlusion, for single bounce indirect lighting
  • uses tessellation for a more realistic ground and snow deformation
  • small touches like subsurface scattering in ice
  • no ray tracing, but uses dynamic cube maps in quality mode
    • performance lacks detail and has misalignment
  • in returning areas, there is more object detail and denser geometry usage
  • PS4 vs PS5 will be a separate video
    • the gap is smaller than Horizon 2
  • 4 modes
    • 60hz tv - quality and performance
    • 120hz tv - 40hz and ultra high performance mode
  • performance mode
    • 60fps
    • 1440p-2160p, 1872p average
    • uses taau solution
    • lower visual quality, but very comparable
    • motion blur isn't adjusted for higher framerate
    • locked 60fps
  • quality mode
    • 30fps

    • higher quality level of detail, reflections, contact hardening shadows, and ao

    • visual quality equal to the 30fps quality mode

    • 80-90fps usually. can go lower and up to 120fps
    • really requires a VRR display, can use without but not recommended due to stutter
  • loading averages around 10s, 20s faster than PS4
  • John is convinced this being a cross-gen is what allows the 60fps and high frame rate mode
