With just over a month to go until its release, Fable II is set to be one of the blockbuster titles of this holiday season. Fans of the original will go nuts over the many improvements while newcomers will wonder why they missed out on the original. And speaking of the original, I happened to find a treasure chest in one portion of the game that wouldn't open. A dialogue box popped up that said "Find out how to access the gold and treasure of your ancestors" and pointed me to a URL. Does this mean you will be able to use your original Fable game save to get extra treasure (provided that saved game is actually on your 360)? We will see when Fable II launches exclusively on the Xbox 360 on October 21.

While it's impossible to predict the full range of Fable 2's experience based on a scant few hours of play, this title will be one to watch, for anyone at all interested in RPGs, and particularly for fans of the original. It arrives October 21st on Xbox 360.

Thinking back on the experience, it was incredibly engrossing, and, based solely on what we played, much better paced than the original Fable. The sheer amount of stuff we could do – what with the running of businesses, various jobs, and interacting with, well, everyone with lasting results – had us pulling ourselves away quite reluctantly, but confidently knowing that, when the game arrives in stores next month, it has the potential to be a much more polished and lasting experience than we'd previously expected.

The sense of connection to the game world this created was incredible, and we couldn't help but be blown away at how much more alive it felt than any other game we can remember playing, GTA IV included. Interview to come so watch out for it.

Three hours isn't a lot of time to spend with an RPG. Even though Molyneux expects Fable II to take 12-15 hours straight through, there's plenty more that will distract you. Just getting through three hours without wasting my time playing with my dog or chatting up girls at the pub was a challenge. It remains to be seen if Fable II can live up to its promise, but three hours in, it's looking like it will at least be one of the best RPGs of '08.

Two hours isn’t even close to enough time to get a true impression of what Fable II is truly going to end up like. But my whistle is definitely wetted. There are a ton of things to do like taking on jobs, buying properties and becoming a real estate mogul, and oh yeah, becoming a super badass warrior with awesome magic powers and super powerful weapons. Despite all the flexibility in gameplay, all the relationships and interactions with NPC’s in the game, Fable II is a action/RPG at its core, full of awesome action, expansive exploration and character development. But now, I don’t want to see it again until I have the real thing in my hands. Stop teasing us, Peter Molyneux.

Fable II doesn't appear to stray too far from the original, but with the addition of numerous jobs, minigames, properties to buy and sell, and what looks to be a solid multiplayer mode, fans should have plenty to do. This is, of course, in addition to the single-player campaign, which Molyneux estimates will take around 10 hours to complete if you rush through without experiencing the full gamut of what's possible. Fable was two and a half hours by comparison

A ONE (compares to different players experiences)

When playing Fable 2 there's a distinct sense of familiarity. Fans of the first game will feel right at home here, while newcomers will appreciate Lionhead's design choices aimed at making a game that is never frustrating to play - the glowing breadcrumb trail being a key component. Peter Molyneux told us that Fable 2 will be his best game to date and so far we're inclined to agree. The quest ahead of us will undoubtedly be littered with danger, but we can't wait.

Fable 2 is a magical world. The graphics, moral decisions, story-arcs, and characters in the game will ensure this. It may well turn out to be what gamers had hoped the first game would be, which is a lofty task indeed.

As Fable II is looking every inch the part as it reaches its final stages of development, it's difficult not to believe that aim is well within reach. The question now is just how will you play it? Are you the heroic adventurer, battling and giving to the poor? The boorish, drunk, property magnate? Or an overlord, ransacking every town you come across? Given the huge amount of choice on offer, you get the feeling that Lionhead knew all along that the greatest story ever told was always going to be your own.
