http://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...g_a_shot_at_fatal_frame_maiden_of_black_waterOn to one of the biggest questions - ss it scary? We've been playing Maiden of Black Water at night whenever possible, with the lights off and the sound turned up for maximum effect. Do the same, and we're fairly certain you're in for a chilling time. We're also happy to report that there haven't been any loud jump scares so far, nor a sudden violin shriek designed to give the player an artificial jolt of adrenaline. There's an elegance and subtlety to the horror of Fatal Frame which allows an unsettling atmosphere to take center stage; slowly building a sense of dread over the course of each chapter. Faces appear in windows and bodies shuffle past your line of sight without fanfare, allowing the moment to mingle with a sense of self-doubt.
Solid visuals are complimented by extraordinary sound design, as ghosts wail in an otherworldly tone that borders on mechanical. It's creepy to hear them lament their actions with their final whimpers, and the stronger "boss" ghosts have even more character to them. One such example took the form of a hanged man, who repeatedly threw himself out of the window before landing right back in front of our eyes. Notes scattered about the environment often give background information on these poor souls, and slowly reveal the influence of a mysterious presence. The English voice acting is also perfectly serviceable so far, but we've still got a way to go yet before completing the story and giving a full opinion.
So far, we feel that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water could manage to both please fans and intrigue newcomers by doing enough differently without sacrificing that morose atmosphere in the process. It's shaping up to be perfect for the Halloween season, and we're very much looking forward to the rest of our trip to Mt.Hikami. In fact; we're dying to stay here as long as we can. Won't you join us? Forever?
http://www.examiner.com/article/fatal-frame-maiden-of-the-black-water-initial-thoughts“Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water” may be the best game in the series since the original:
With plenty of ambiance, beautiful visuals and some of the best usage of the Nintendo Wii U GamePad, “Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water,” through our initial play time, has been the most intriguing offering on the system in quite some time.
With the release of the indie hit “Year Walk” earlier this year, the Wii U has proven to be a place where scares are more than possible, they are a reality. While comparing “Year Walk” and “Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water” makes sense because they share the same genre, Fatal Frame is on entirely different level from the start due to its wonderful visuals and better use of the console.
For a series that’s lost some of its luster over the years after a wonderful debut entry, “Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water” is easily one of the most natural games on the Wii U and a title that hardcore loyalists of the series will adore. From the sound of rushing water to the vibrations from walking and the provocative visuals and story, it’s a game that mature gamers on the Wii U have been waiting for. Using storytelling devices made famous in Japanese horror flicks, it’s oozing with charisma.
Right from the beginning of the story, the GamePad is shaking and the grim, shadowy visuals will put you on edge. While it would have been better to have less text on the screen and voiceovers, the atmosphere is dark and creepy. At times, you’ll want to stop playing because you know a jump scare is coming, but you trek on. While some of the frightful moments are obvious, some will force you to press pause and collect your thoughts.
The thing that brings you in the most is the controls. The fact that you use the GamePad to take photos is such a perfect fit and although the game takes its time to develop in terms of story, walking around levels and using the camera is seamless. As a result, it’ll be a cult-favorite on a console that is starving for solid third-party titles that delve far from the fun, platforming aura Nintendo provides.
So while you may want to play “Super Mario Maker” with your kids during the day, the scare tactics in “Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water” make it a great game to play once the babies are in bed.
