CD Projekt has announced Cyberpunk, its new RPG is based on the pen and paper game Cyberpunk 2020.

It's set in a futuristic world with a degenerated society and like the tabletop game, it will be a mature RPG, set in the series' "realistic and brutal" world. Cyberpunk designer and RPG vet Mike Pondsmith has been working on the videogame adaption with CDP for over a year, and took to the stage to talk about the game's setting.

At the conference, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwinski promised players that this game would have all of the hallmarks of the Witcher series with rich detail. It will be a non-linear experience with "a complex and gripping story."

Players will experience the world through their own, unique characters chosen from different classes - be they blood-thirsty mercenaries or cunning hackers - that they will equip with vast selection of cybernetic implants and deadly weapons. A

As in the Witcher series, players will face morally ambiguous choices, their actions influencing events in the world at large and the fate of the individuals they encounter.

"For over two decades, I've been proud to say that Cyberpunk's been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game," said Pondsmith. "And it's been a huge success for me and our many fans, with over 5 million players worldwide. But over all that time we haven't found the right team to bring our Cyberpunk world to full digital life - until now.

Official title and 'more details' teased at Special Event 2012
The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red will make announcements regarding its new 'Cyberpunk' game at an event on October 18
CDPR is set to reveal the game's official name, along with 'more exclusive details' at the event.

Called 'Special Event 2012', it will be hosted by CDPR and digital retail service GOG.com on October 18 at 6:00pm UK time (10am Pacific). The whole event will be streamed online via Facebook and gog.com.

The developer says it will also announce more details on the upcoming release of The Witcher 2 on Mac OS X at the Special Event, while GOG.com will reveal plans to bring its PC games "to a new operating system".

Cyberpunk is one of two new major RPGs in development at CDPR, described by the developer as a "triple-A game based on the cult classic 'Cyberpunk' pen & paper RPG system created by Mike Pondsmith", who is himself involved in the project.

In the game, "players will experience the world through their own, unique characters chosen from different classes - be they blood-thirsty mercenaries or cunning hackers who they will equip with vast choice of cybernetic implants and deadly weapons," explained CDPR.

Cyberpunk 2077, the next game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, is the biggest title the studio has ever made.

The sci-fi-flavoured RPG was originally announced back in 2012, but the Polish outlet has remained quiet on specificities of the project since.

Now it has been revealed that the title will be ever grander in scale than the third and final entry in the developer’s sprawling fantasy series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before,” visual effects artist Jose Teixeira told MCV. “Far, far bigger.

“We're really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.”

The Witcher 3 became the fastest-selling game in the UK during 2015 upon its release back in May, but was overtaken by the launch of fellow open-world title Batman Arkham Knight one month later.

Teixeira continued by saying that The Witcher 3’s scope had helped the studio to refine its open-world formula for Cyberpunk 2077.

"The Witcher helped Cyberpunk quite a bit, because the game got so big and so complex that it really taught us,” he explained. “We really didn't know what was going to happen.

“If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience. Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it.

"I have a lot of things that I want to change and do better the next time around, and I can guarantee that almost everyone in that studio has something that they go 'I did this this time, next time I can do it differently, I can do it better'.”

Unsurprisingly, Teixeira refused to give any clues regarding a potential release window for the title.

“The name of the game is Cyberpunk 2077, and we usually say the release date is 2077,” he joked.

CD Projekt Red wants to publish Cyberpunk 2077 at the end of 2016. This has been verified by a reliable source close to the Polish developer and Gamereactor Germany.

Officially there is still only talk regarding a PC release, but - and this is pure speculation on our part - it's likely that the game will be coming out on both PS4 and Xbox One.

The Witcher studio has been working on the sci-fi RPG based on the pen & paper universe of Mike Pondsmith since mid-2012, and with work on Wild Hunt coming to a close soon, expect development to pick up pace in the months ahead.

We reached out for CD Projekt for an official comment, but have yet to receive one.
