    Max Payne 3 Sneak Peak
    In July of 2001, Max Payne burst onto the scene, quickly becoming both a critical and commercial success. Finnish publisher Remedy drew inspiration from John Woo and Noir films to create a hard-boiled character that could slow down time and emphasize the complete badass-ness of the game’s action. With an ongoing inner monologue, Remedy had created a masterpiece that players could get to know personally.

    Over a decade later, Rockstar is poised to launch their entry to the series; Max Payne 3. After a brief viewing of the game, I can confidently say that Rockstar Vancouver was the perfect studio to pass the torch to.

    The demo opens with Max, dwelling in melancholia in his dilapidated New york apartment. Not requiring much else from life, he stubbornly refuses a job offer that would task him with protecting people in locations where police are unable. Before this conversation can logically conclude, a gang of vengeance hungry thugs calls out to Max from the street. The player learns that Max has killed the gang leader’s only son. What has Max been up to?

    “Not inviting these guys in?” quips Max’s guest.

    “When did I ever need to invite trouble in?” responds Max’s inner monologue.

    This opening, taking place in New York, shows that Rockstar has no interest in ignoring Max’s roots. In a traditional Max Payne fashion, cutscenes like this will take a motion comic approach. Players will be able to get inside Max’s head in order to determine his motivation, his emotional state and other important information that would otherwise be unavailable to us. We’ll really be able to see what makes Max fit in any given situation.

    Cutscenes will attempt to blend the playable sections with the nonplayable via quick cuts and other cinematic techniques. Blood, grime, sweat and even the weapons Max carries will be displayed in cutscenes.

    Fans will also be glad to know that James McCaffrey will once again provide the voice for Max Payne.

    The demo continues and for the first time in years, players get to take control of Max. After gunning down some enemies, Max finds himself at gunpoint. Before he can meet his demise, a psychotic neighbor blows your attackers to bits and storms off down the hall.

    This leaves his apartment open to exploration. If you’re the curious type (and I am), you can rummage through his things and start to piece together parts of the man’s personality. It is immediately clear that he is unstable. A gun nut, perhaps? Possibly a conspiracy theorist. Ambiguous moments like these are meant to engage the player, requiring us to fill in the gaps.

    Before heading back into the thick of things, Max discovers some painkillers in the psychopath’s apartment. Without so much as a note, he borrows them and heads off down the hall. Max soon discovers his neighbor, a hostage on his knees, spouting off lunatic phrases before ultimately exploding, ”cleansing” his captors in fire. Guess he won’t be missing the painkillers afterall.

    This salute to the surreal is a familiar and integral part of the Max Payne formula. Seeing it executed in the demo has me at ease; Rockstar has a tentative grasp on the formula.

    The demo fast forwards a bit. Max is en route to Sao Paulo, Brazil and has picked up a lady friend along the way. This character will have to be protected at all times. Not surprising since most of Max’s problems center around women. She won’t be useless, however. In the manner of Uncharted or Enslaved, you will have to cooperate with her in order to traverse the environment. You will hold up fences or boost her up ladders so that she can in turn open up paths for Max.

    An interesting facet of the game’s design is that the motion capture actors were actually required to move around sets in order to give the game a realistic appearance. Each and every step has weight. Instead of sliding around the floor, Max will make quick cuts and have momentum. Max’s signature cinematic dives will also have a new feel to them. Since the motion caption actors weren’t keen on bashing their bodies off of the floor, you get a real sense of self-preservation from the characters.

    It’s not something we usually consider when we play a game. A lack of this detail is easy to overlook but goddamn, when motion capture this good is present, you take notice.

    In terms of gunplay, Rockstar has introduced a Read Dead Redemption style weapon wheel. Max will be able to carry up to three weapons; two single handed, dual wieldable weapons in addition to a single two handed weapon.

    The game has a dedicated cover system for the first time in the series. While this sounds scary at first, Rockstar promises that the focus will still be on run and gun action. I saw Max shoot fuel pumps. I saw him drop a bus onto enemies. I saw him dangle from a crane while simultaneously eliminating his foes in slow motion. I have no doubt in my mind that this game will be a visceral amalgamation of all things manly.

    The AI in this game has also seen a major overhaul. Bullets are mapped from the gun to their target so enemies will respond dynamically to the shots fired around them. They are scripted and attack in waves. If you elect to hide from them, they will actually search every nook and cranny until they find you. This creates high anxiety moments as you watch them pass by your cleverly concealed hiding spot.

    When you finally pop out of hiding and pollish off the wave of nasties, you are rewarded with a slow motion shot of the bullet piercing the deserving flesh of your enemy. This time around, players will be able to control exactly how fast the bullet moves in accordance to their preferences. I prefer to savor the moment but hey, to each their own.

    On the other hand, the nasties will occassionally get the better of you. When this happens, the camera will sway to the last enemy to hit Max and, assuming you can kill him in the allotted time frame, you will be allowed to continue playing. Rockstar has named this mechanic “Last Man Standing” and states that it will consume one painkiller.

    Players will be able to get their hands on Max Payne in March of 2012. Now, as a reward for reading one thousand words of text, here’s a trailer. Enjoy!

    Офигительный ролик, похоже Рок Стар снова молодцы. Таки видно полет каждой пули, то что было основой старого Макса Пейна, как для меня.

    У меня пикча больше :Р Если ты к этому А вообще наткнулся на Игромании. А ковёр даже у Спешиала всё равно дурацкий, как в третьесортных боевиках.

    Отодвигается немного выход игры:
    Консольные версии выходят в NA - 15 мая, Europe -18 мая. PC версия - 29 мая и 1 июня соответственно.
