Blu-ray wins format battle, but consumers slow to buy it While many people expected sales of Blu-ray disc players to spike when Toshiba decided to drop out of the high-definition HD DVD market in February 2008, according to a new Harris Poll, it seems that the recently resolved high definition format war is not motivating consumers to purchase the advanced DVD players any time soon. The Harris Poll of 2,529 U.S. adults surveyed online between April 7 and 15, 2008 by Harris Interactive found that: – Ownership of standard DVD players is practically ubiquitous (87%); – Few report owning Blu-ray disc players (4%), Sony PlayStation 3 (5%), HD DVD players (6%) and the HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 (1% have external drive while 9% have an Xbox 360); – Only nine percent of non-Blu-ray player owners report being likely to purchase a Blu-ray disc player within the next year, even when made fully aware that Blu-ray is considered to be the definitive technology for high definition DVD players going forward; – Two-thirds of consumers are familiar with the recently resolved high-definition format war (67%) and seven in ten of them have heard that Blu-ray is the unofficial winner (69%); – Nearly a quarter (23%) of those aware of the format war report that they had been waiting for the rivalry to play itself out before purchasing a high definition player, but by April they had yet to do so; – Although one-third of consumers report owning a high definition television set (HDTV; 35%), with incidence higher among males (41%) versus females (28%) and rising decidedly with household income (15% for those with less than $35K vs. 53% among those with $75K+), the percentage of HDTV owners likely to purchase a Blu-ray disc player is only 14 percent; – Current ownership of Blu-ray disc players among HDTV owners stands at 10 percent. According to Joan Barten Kline, Vice President of the Harris Interactive Media & Entertainment Practice, "Since Blu-ray disc player pricing averages more than $300, which is well above the cost for the latest generation of standard DVD players with up-converters, Blu-ray disc players may be encountering price sensitivity despite the advanced technology." Internet Connectivity Interest in a Blu-ray disc player with Internet connectivity expected to be out in the Fall in a higher price range is also lacking: – US adults are more likely to purchase a Sony PlayStation 3 that plays Blu-ray discs and has Internet access for $399 (11%) or an original Blu-ray disc player without connectivity for the same price (10%) versus a new Blu-ray disc player with Internet for $500-$650 (4%); – Not surprisingly, the under 40 crowd is most likely to opt for the PlayStation 3 as their Blu-ray capable device of choice – fully 23 percent of those in the 30-39 age group are likely to purchase this device in the next year (compared to 14% likely to buy an original Blu-ray disc player or the new Blu-ray disc player with Internet connectivity 5%)). What Will Become of the HD-DVD Player? – Like the BetaMax loyalists of yore, almost half (45%) of those who currently own an HD DVD player say that they will just continue to use it and continue purchasing HD DVD’s as long as they are available; – Another 14 percent of those who currently own an HD DVD player will continue to use it with the HD DVD’s they have already purchased, but do not plan on buying any new ones; – An equal proportion of HD DVD player owners (15%) will continue to use it but also plan to invest in a Blu-ray disc player in the future. Story filed 19 May 2008 Источник: dvd-intelligence.com Blu-ray players slow to capitalise on HD DVD death The end of HD DVD players didn't signal the beginning of consumers making a commitment to Blu-ray standalone players, according to the latest data from market research company The NPD Group. Standalone Blu-ray player unit sales dropped 40% from January to February in the United States and only saw a 2% increase from February to March, according to NPD's Retail Tracking Service. HD DVD player unit sales dropped 13% from January to February, but as production stopped and inventories dried up, sales spiraled down 65% from February to March. In fact, sales of Blu-ray standalone players remain so low that NPD has yet to release actual numbers, reportedly for fear that it would be easy to identify individual retailers. The research group will start to give actual figures later this year, said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD. "That standalone Blu-ray players haven't picked up significantly from HD DVD's loss shows that few consumers were dissuaded primarily by the 'format war'," said Rubin. "When we surveyed consumers late last year, an overwhelming number of them said they weren't investing in a new next-generation player because their old DVD player worked well and next-generation players were too expensive. It's clear from retail sales that those consumer sentiments are still holding true." One option consumers are embracing to enhance their DVD viewing experience is purchasing up-converting DVD players. According to NPD's Retail Tracking Service, unit sales of up-converting players were up over 5% in the first quarter of 2008 compared to 2007, while sales of DVD players without an up-converting feature declined 39%. Recently, Amazon.com is reported to be giving these players away with the purchase of certain Samsung TV sets. This news comes in the heel of ABI Research which noted that many consumers may not see significant difference in picture quality between ‘up-converted’ DVD and Blu-ray. "Consumers continue to see a gap between Blu-ray's premium video quality and features and its premium price," said Rubin. "As content availability improves, this holiday season will be the best opportunity to date for retailers and manufacturers to promote Blu-ray adoption." Story filed 4 May 2008 Источник: dvd-intelligence.com ABI Research: Up-converting DVD players challenge to Blu-ray One of the main challenges facing Blu-ray, according to the latest ABI Research, is that many consumers are not actually dissatisfied with the quality delivered by their conventional DVD players, when up-converted to play on high-definition TV sets. "We are starting to see an increase in the number of DVD players with built-in upconverters, and the video processing is getting better with each new generation," says ABI analyst Steve Wilson, . "Today about 35% of all DVD players sold include upconversion. ABI Research expects that figure to climb to about 60% by 2013" said Wilson. The state of the standalone Blu-ray player market is not all that encouraging. The Blu-ray installed base today is heavily tilted towards Sony's Playstation 3. Wilson continues, "The studios better hope that people are playing movies on their Playstations. Otherwise there's very little installed base. In 2008 about 85% of the Blu-ray players in the market will be found in PS3s; the dedicated consumer electronics and PC-based types of Blu-ray players won’t catch up in terms of market share until about 2013." The PS3's attach rate (the number of disc purchased by machine) started low, just under one BD movie per console, and falling if one goes by the latest TNS Worldpanel figures presentedat the recent BVA Research Day showing that only one in six UK PS3 owner bought a BD disc. In an effort to spur the market, optical disc manufacturers are lowering prices and PC manufacturers are offering lower-cost configurations. Bare-bones PCs with Blu-ray players are arriving. "But, if you’re only going to spend $500-600 on a PC, are you really going to spend 40% more for a built-in Blu-ray player?," asks Wilson. Meanwhile consumer electronics manufacturers are maintaining high prices for dedicated players. "The studios had hoped to have settled the war," Wilson concludes, "but I think they’re going to be disappointed when they don’t see the volumes of players going up they way they would have liked." A view echoed in anew report from Bernstein Research which predicts that mass adoption of Blu-ray won’t start until the end of 2009, when players fall beneath $200. Blu-ray ownership will not hit 25 percent of US households until the end of 2011. The good news for the home video market is that Bernstein Research expects Blu-ray sales will help revenues grow 2.4 percent compounded annually between 2007 and 2011. Without Blu-ray discs, the market would be down 2.2 percent each year, Bernstein estimates. Story filed 27 April 2008 Источник: dvd-intelligence.com
