    Greetings!

    It’s nice to meet all of you, or shall I say, see all of you again. This is Shinjiro Takada from ATLUS. Usually, I am responsible for working on the Devil Survivor* series, but this time, I was tasked with working on the production for the upcoming crossover title “Illusory Revelations ♯ Fire Emblem*”

    After over two long years of keeping you waiting, we felt it was finally time to showcase this game. Did you have a look at the new PV*?

    This is the result of our collaboration work on the “Fire Emblem” series. I think many people will find it quite different than they had originally expected. Originally, it was very challenging for us to get the “Fire Emblem” aspect into the game, but we worked carefully with Nintendo to ensure it’d work well and deliver the feeling you get from the series.
    But, we were told that “as long as development of this title conforms with what Intelligent Systems originally would have wanted, and ATLUS develops it and triumphs through it, then ATLUS’ work is good.”

    It was following that that we were able to come to our conclusion and settle on the concept for this project. As a result of this, “Illusory Revelations ♯ Fire Emblem” follows the basic axis of what I would say are “Realistic characters who suffer from many conflicts and worries in modern-day Japan” in this RPG. It was capturing the feeling of “Fire Emblem” that was the real challenge during the development of this concept, as this is a collaboration project, after all.

    In this PV, many people may find it hard to understand where the essence of “Fire Emblem” comes into play. However, this will be explained more in the future, so please wait for a follow-up to this.

    The character designs that would become the face of this project were designed by toi8*, who we had requested to assist us. Even though “Illusory Revelations ♯ Fire Emblem” follows its own world and has a touch of fresh colors and poppy visuals, we wanted to make it easy to get into the world of this game, while still making it look refined and familiar for those who are fans of the series.

    Although only four characters appear in the spotlight of this PV, there are more characters (some of which make a quick appearance in the PV) prepared for the future, so please stay tuned!

    It should also be noted that “Illusory Revelations ♯ Fire Emblem” has given us the opportunity to work with other developers. This time, in the first edition of this creators’ blog, you got to hear comments from me, the top batter of the project. But, we have interviews planned with other ATLUS staff and developers in the future, so we hope everyone will enjoy them as they become available!

    While development has finally reached its climax, and we are celebrating that, there is still a ways to go. We are working hard on to bring this game to you with our staff. However, there is still some work to be done, so this game will be released this winter. We thank you for your patience, and hope to make a project with our team that everyone can enjoy!

    Nice to meet you. I am the chief director for Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Mitsuru Hirata of Atlus. I’ve previously worked as the director for Radiant Historia, and as the supporting director of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.

    It’s been about two months ago since officially announcing this title, and I’m sure many of you were surprised by it. Even I told myself ‘to think that a collaboration with Fire Emblem would shape up like this!’ and I was really surprised. Even though I’m the one developing it.

    Looking back 25 years ago, I have some memories of when I first encountered Fire Emblem. It had a package design with a soft touch that reminded me of a certain popular feature anime film. Its game characteristics managed to crush the young me, who thought at the time, “I’ve played so many tough-as-nails role-playing games on PC up until now, so this should be easy enough for me!”

    Then, as I played, each time I lost an ally, I would mutter to myself: “T-this is the devil.” And in the end of my first run, I eventually found myself incapacitated, since I didn’t have enough units to continue fighting, and I wept and started the game over from scratch…

    It was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, I tell you…

    “Oh, so that’s how you use that word! Our predecessors had some good quotes! Ahahaha!!” These were some of the things I thought while continuously pressing the reset button in despair on a daily basis.

    Reset > Sulk in bed > Eat > Try again > Reset > Sulk in bed > Take a bath > Try again > Reset… on an endless repetition. It was like a toxin that kept me playing countless times even while grieving, and I was completely absorbed.

    And that is how I met the game that shaved off parts of my innocence. After that, fate repeated itself once more, and my Super Famicom’s reset button actually broke, so I had to buy another one. Even on the Game Boy Advance, I was busy reading the enemy’s moves two or three steps ahead, and before I realized it, I had ended up staying on the train until the last stop… and the ride home in a taxi, that also brings back some good memories… haha…

    That said, there’s something I must confess…

    I’m actually pretty terrible at strategy games (lol). It kind of sounds like a situation that I should be slapped on the head for saying, like “… hey!” but the truth is, I love Fire Emblem.

    Before Fire Emblem, I believe most of the so-called genre of strategy games consisted of game characteristics such as “win accordingly, don’t emphasize too much over that process, a strategy to win is more important than position,” and so on. For this reason, units weren’t treated as importantly, and the tide of battle was easily turned using numbers. Such developments were frequent… and I was just not great with that mindset.

    However, Fire Emblem was a strategy game with a completely different approach. Paying attention to the units is important! If they die, they won’t come back! You can’t win with just numbers either! Rather than just claiming victory, there’s also the birth of the drama that arises from having your favorite unit win through battles (even if they’re weak).

    … I was mesmerized. As I was playing, I realized that each space I moved a unit, each time I hit the enemy, I was writing my own story about it all in my head.

    “Ack! Hear me, the now deceased Draug… I, the Armor Knight, shall take on this castle wall in your stead! The rest of you sneak around for a surprise attack!”

    “R-Roger!”

    “Only I, the Pegasus Knight, can go over these mountains! I must catch up to the others! Their lives are in danger!”

    And that’s kind of what it was like… of course, that might be a bit too much. However, I feel that this is Fire Emblem’s greatest charm. I believe that the importance of characters is also a common element in the games we make at Atlus. In a sense, I think that a collaboration between Fire Emblem and Atlus is as natural as it gets! (lol)

    Fire Emblem is a title that is full of memories, intermingled with love and hate, something I can’t express with one word, and before I knew it, I’d gone from being on the side of playing it onto the side that is making it. This must be fate. The femme fatale that toyed with my youth! I’ve been waiting for you! My long-lasting grudge!

    It’s kind of like finally being able to meet the person I’ve longed for over many years, but since the development’s first day and several years of change afterwards, we were able to show you guys the trailer, which is the fruition of my own “memories of 25 years”.

    As far as what kind of changes, actual game content, and such, I hope we get to talk about it next time. This time, I wanted to first talk about what Fire Emblem means to me (lol).

    Lastly, here’s a peek at a screenshot on something that’s currently in development…

    This is a look at a certain dungeon. It was shown a bit in the trailer during the Nintendo Direct back on April 2nd, but do you notice any differences from then if you compare it? The floor’s texture has improved, there are additional objects [in the environment]… and so on.

    The April 2nd trailer isn’t the final visual representation of the game. We’ll continue improving on the quality from this point on, so please look forward to it!

    And that’s how the staff is zealously developing Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem at the moment. I believe we’ll be able to reveal new information soon, so again, please look forward to it!

    Nintendo showed off a a good deal of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem gameplay footage during their Treehouse Live@E3 stream this morning. The stream revealed a bunch of new details about the game, and we’ve listed them below. Before you read on, you might want to check out a brief story summary for the game.

    • Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem takes place in Tokyo, like a lot of other Atlus games. You’ll see districts like Shibuya and Harajuku that have been modelled after their real-life counterparts, albeit with a few changes made in support of gameplay.
    • For example; the real Shibuya is a fairly large district but has been made a little more compact in Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. Meanwhile, Harajuku in real life has narrow streets, but they’ve been widened in the game. Atlus staff had to wake up early in the morning so that they could take reference photos of different areas around Tokyo while people weren’t up and about.
    • The way the city looks changes based on events in the game. For example, once Tsubasa has made her debut as a performer, the posters around the city will change to reflect that, and you’ll hear her song playing in convenience stores and the like.

    • Aside from the Mirages and Mirage Masters, there are lots of other little references to both the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem franchises. For example, there’s a Hee-Ho Mart in Shibuya, which is a convenience store. This store is run by a shopkeeper named Shio who looks like Anna from the Fire Emblem games.

    • “Performa” is one of the game’s core aspects. It is described as people’s creative energy. Mirages are attracted to Performa and suck it out of people (the evil ones do, anyway). At some point in the game, Tsubasa’s Performa awakens when she watches a concert by Kiria, and it spurs her on to pursue her own dreams of performing.
    • While everyone has Performa, Mirage Masters are people with extraordinary Performa. They can also see each other’s Performa awakening, as well as when it is being sucked out of somebody, but common people can’t.
    • Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem places a great deal of importance on music. All of the songs within the game are being written and produced by actual Japanese songwriters that produced popular songs in Japan, so they aren’t the kind of songs you typically hear in anime. In addition, every voice actor and actress within the game has to sing their character’s songs. This was described as a “real localization challenge”.
    • There are dialogue choices within the game, but how these affect events has not been revealed yet. One choice is when Tsubasa’s Performa awakens, you can either encourage her to pursue her dreams or tell her you don’t think she’s cut out to be a performer.

    • Once you’re in a dungeon, aggro works just like it does in Shin Megami Tensei IV and the recent Persona games. Enemies will spot you and begin making their way toward you. If you can hit them with your weapon before they make contact, you’ll stun them, and this will give you an advantage at the start of the battle.
    • Every dungeon within the game has its own gimmicks and themes. For example; the dungeon shown off during the livestream was modelled after the 109 building in Shibuya and was themed around fashion. Other dungeons will have other gimmicks. The giant maid costume statue you see above was part of one such puzzle.

    • Once you get into battles, the battle system contains traces of both Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem. The weapon triangle from Fire Emblem is supposedly in the game, and so is the focus on exploiting enemy weaknesses from Shin Megami Tensei.
    • If you target an enemy with an attack they’re weak to, the game will let you know with a green exclamation mark, just like in Shin Megami Tensei. You won’t know the enemy’s weakness right away, though—you’ll have to learn enemy weaknesses by engaging them and hitting them with an attack they’re weak to, which is again similar to how Shin Megami Tensei works.
    • Characters can have Dual Arts attacks together, for which they pair up. These become available as the bond between two characters strengthens, and we assume the dialogue options play a role in this. Also, depending on the two characters in question, the Dual Arts look different. For example, Tsubasa and Eleonora have an attack where they’re singing together, while Toma and another female character share somewhat of a rivalry with each other, so their Dual Art consists of them trying to outdo each other.
    • Fire Emblem levelling up music plays when your characters level up.

    • The enemy you see above is a boss based on Gangrel from Fire Emblem: Awakening. He’s a Mirage that has taken possession of a fashion photographer, and you’ll battle him to free said photographer at some point in the game.

    • The Wii U GamePad serves as your cellphone in Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. You’ll get messages from your friends, asking where you are and what you’re up to. You’ll be able to contact them using your phone, and there are dialogue options within the text messages as well.

    Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem - AKA Genei Ibun Roku #FE - was shown off in a brief and almost incomprehensible video during Nintendo's E3 Digital Event which left fans none the wiser as to what kind of experience this crossover will provide. Thankfully, GameSpot has been talking to the team behind the game to get a better idea of the setting, style and gameplay involved.

    According to Fire Emblem producer and Nintendo group manager Hitoshi Yamagami, the idea was a fairly random one:

    In our team at Nintendo Co., Ltd, there's a woman who really loves the Shin Megami Tensei series. This is how this all started. And when she started this conversation within the company, we were working with Atlus at the time on a purikura [decorative photography] program for DSi and 3DS. At the time she said, 'Mr. Yamagami, there's something I would like to do. I want to make a game that mixes Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei.' And we said, that's exciting, let's give it a shot! But when we brought it to Atlus, they said, we'd like to but we can't, we're busy.

    The idea was shelved until Atlus approached Nintendo and things started moving in the right direction, as Atlus producer Shinjiro Takada explains:

    When they asked if I wanted to [work with Nintendo], I was heading the Devil Survivor series. So once that series finished, two years after that conversation, I said, let's give this a shot.

    Yamagami also revealed that the game won't be a turn-based strategy title, but instead a more conventional "Japanese" RPG:

    From Nintendo's point of view, because it's Fire Emblem, we thought, let's make this a turn-based strategy game. In the beginning, even Atlus wanted to make it a turn-based strategy, but after finishing the concept for it, I said, no, don't do this, if you do something like this, it's something [Fire Emblem developer] Intelligent Systems could just make with the main series. Do something we can't do. That's when we decided to make it a JRPG set in modern Japan.

    The story involves two students who notice that the world is being attacked by supernatural beings - a common theme in the Shin Megami Tensei series. The duo become pop stars in order to combat these beasts, as music allows them to become more connected with "Mirages" - spiritual warriors who enter our reality to offer help.

    Yamagami explains that this concept allowed them to introduce fantasy characters from Fire Emblem in a modern-day setting:

    One of the reasons [we made Fire Emblem characters Mirages] is because since it's an RPG in modern times, we can't have a Pegasus Knight suddenly show up and have the player think that it all makes sense. Because Fire Emblem has its own world, we had to have these characters enter the modern world as visitors from a mirror dimension, called the Idolosphere. And as there are ally units like Chrom and Shiida who come from this world, there are also antagonists that come from that world as well and want to destroy our world.

    Takada expands on this:

    This is why the characters are all entertainers: in Japan, similar to Greek mythology, there's the idea of the gods being connected to the arts. It's a shamanistic element that's been interpreted by Atlus. The idea is, Japanese priestesses would dance and the dancing would bring them closer to the gods. We wanted to spin this in an Atlus way, so all the characters in the game have some connection to the arts, and that connection and their ability to express themselves attracts the Mirages to them. People who are good at singing or dancing or acting have really strong bonds with Mirages.

    While the tone and the setting might not scream Fire Emblem, Yamagami thinks that long-time fans of the series will spot the influence of Intelligent Systems' famed franchise:

    What I'm most proud about this game is the fact that despite everything that we've said about it, as you play through the story, you'll realize that, what happens happens for a reason, because this game is inspired by Fire Emblem. So as a Fire Emblem fan, you'll recognize why things are happening; it's happening because it's Fire Emblem.

    • Fire Emblem characters are being selected from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Fire Emblem: Awakening. Others will also appear as friends, or as enemies or masterminds.
    • Characters are selected based off things such as their popularity ranking data. Both Cain and Abel will also appear.
    • Characters that appeared as enemies in Fire Emblem will appear as enemies in this game.
    • The main story takes about 30 hours to clear. The side stories and such take about the same amount of time.
    • The game is currently in the debugging and balance adjustments stage. All of its features have already been implemented.
    • This is being called a Fire Emblem and Atlus collaboration, but it’s a completely new RPG that any RPG fan can enjoy.

    Композитор игры Yoshiaki Fujisawa немного рассказал про создание музыки для нее и вообще про историю создания игры. Силиконера перевела:

    – Fujisawa has worked on plenty of music arrangements in the past
    – This includes arrangements for talents such as Kenichi “Hyadain” Maeyamada, music for some anime such as Nichijou, and more recently Love Live and GATE
    – Working for Avex Group on this game
    – His work with Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem all started back with a single phone call in late-fall of 2013
    – Avex’s Aburai [George Aburai] asked if he was busy and gave him a proposal
    – From there, it was decided that he’d join the staff in the development of a new game
    – This would end up being the new Wii U game
    – He then met up with the developers and sound team, learned more about the game
    – He was a bit nervous, considering that he’s more familiar with working on music for anime and TV shows
    – First thing he felt: “it was very difficult!”
    – He struggled a lot in the completely different mindset that is required for making video game music, as he’s more familiar with how things are done for TV shows.
    – Everything from the timing, flow, and feelings of a song, were all different from the way he usually works on music
    – However, the sound team from Atlus gave him all kinds of advice that came in handy for his work
    – He says working with the team in an incredibly creative environment, where ideas shapes themselves up, was really fun
    – He recalls how excited he felt when they first checked out a demonstration of one of his songs, although he says that he was always nervous whenever it came to presenting the songs
    – For this game, “entertainment” is a big theme
    – Fujisawa explains that the game is full of songs that bring out the feelings of the stages and floors, and plenty of groovy tracks
    – “Especially for the battles—I just can’t help but want to dance [to the music] while fighting!”
    – He explains that all the field and event scene tracks have been made with a variety of tracks that have been made through the challenges of ideas provided from the team
    – “Oh, and everything about this title is overwhelmingly great, if I do say so myself.”
    – The above image is a character that appears in the game, and it was modeled after the composer’s actual look

    Два "мира" игры (Entertainment World и Other World) будут иметь свою боевку:
    There are a few keywords for Genei Ibun Roku #FE like “Idolsphere”, “Mirage”, and “Mirage Master”. The Idolsphere is an alternate version of cities such as Shibuya and Harajuku where the Mirages come from. As for the plot, it’s about an average protagonist who stumbles into such a world. Mirages are mysterious beings from the Idolsphere dimension that lend their power to humans. Of course, they look like Fire Emblem series’ heroes and villains. Mirage Masters, who receive aid in battle from heroes such as Chrom and Sheeda, are those who hold a mysterious power that allows them to utilize Mirages by summoning them.

    Mamori Minamoto, voiced by Kaori Fukuhara, is one of the new characters introduced by Famitsu. She’s a talented Mirage Master who works in the same entertainment district as the protagonist. Mamori had a small break to fame as the “Wrenchin’ Idol Mamorin”. We also know that she’s a middle schooler who loves to sing Showa ballads and wears traditional clothing.

    Barry Goodman is another new character, and he’s voiced by Yuuichi Nakamura. Barry is a musician who came to Japan seeking Otaku culture (loves the anime “Dear Witch Mother” by the way!) He’s a trainer of Fortuna Entertainment, and teaches the protagonist and others Spartan-like lessons. Famitsu describes him as a strict teacher from abroad named the “Demon Instructor” in the entertainment world. Thanks to his bright demeanor that makes any place feel at ease, he’s a “mood-maker”.

    – A top musician who is both cool and beautiful
    – Has a lot of support from younger people
    – Has a secretive private life, not many people know about it

    Tharja
    – A Mirage of a Dark Mage that uses forbidden arts
    – Supports Kiria by becoming a staff in battle, also supports her in everyday life
